Hialeah Census Bureau

Only in Hialeah does 10+10=10. Talk about adding confusion to chaos. A better sign would have explained that filling out your census form doesn't equal getting reported to INS. Just sayin'.

Another Hialeah Eyesore

This is the old Molina's in East Hialeah. Hialeah is becoming a dump, filled with abandoned businesses and foreclosed houses. The streets are run down and there's garbage all over the street. When is the city government going to step up and bring East Hialeah back to beautiful?

There should be some sort of rule on how long a business can be boarded up and looking like an eyesore before the owners need to start doing something about it. What a mess. You should see the house beside it!

2010 Hialeah Census

Sorry for not updating the blog sooner but we were really busy counting all the people in our house for the 2010 census. Bro, talk about taking forever! It's not easy turning a single family home into 12 different apartments. You know how that goes, right?

Anyways, now that we're back we've got a fun little series called Latino or Americano. We're going to spotlight houses across Hialeah and you have to guess if they are owned by a Latino or an Americano. Oh come on, it'll be fun!

Ok, so what's your guess? Latino or Americano?

Hello Hialeah: Only Crazy People Drink Snail Mucus

An East Hialeah man is being investigated over allegedly smuggling illegal Giant African Snails into Florida as if that weren't weird enough, he allegedly convinced his followers to drink their juices as part of a religious healing ritual as a part of the Ifa Orisha religion.

Just another typical day in Hialeah.

Read more about this guy and his snail juice over at the Miami Herald: Hialeah man investigated over feeding Giant African Snails to followers.

Rico Mayajijua and Comida Cantina

Here's a shot of a typical looking business on East 10th Avenue. Sandwiched in between the auto body shops and factories, you'll find little cafeterias. This one is proud to announce they're under new management and they even offer cantina. Would you buy dinner for your family here?

Payless Shoes is Always on Fire

If you didn't know better you'd think Payless Shoe store on 49th street (NW 103rd) in West Hialeah catches fire at least once a week. Why? 'Cause at least once a week there's a firetruck parked outside. My guess is the firefighters can't get the truck through the Starbucks drive-thru. Still, do they need to take the firetruck there regularly? Bro, can't someone just do a coffee run?

Looks Like We've Made It

Photo credit: South Florida Daily Blog

Looks like el jefe de los blogs has given us their approval to be included on their blog-roll. This is good news for us. All of you who've been dying to live in Hialeah can now enjoy it's beauty through our blog adventure. Oh and leave a comment now and then will ya?

Here's what SFDB had to say about is. Estamos muy contentos con la descripción.

Hellos and Goodbyes:

"Hialeah may be one of the more unique places to live in South Florida. That's saying a lot based upon the neighborhoods we have down here. So what better place to base a blog than The City Of Streets With 3 Names? Sweet Home Hialeah started out with a bang early last month, posting several times a day and sprinting through Hialeah-based content quicker than you can say "Milander Park." They've slowed a bit since, but "Pepe" is still serving up some interesting and humorous posts that document life in Hialeah.

SWH has all the widgets going on [recent posts, recent comments, the Twitter, etc.] and maintains a quality blogroll ['cause it includes SFDB] so you'll get the full service blogging experience when you visit.

I'm hoping Sweet Home Hialeah can keep it going and not flame out because Lord knows there's enough happening in that town to keep 20 bloggers busy."

Again, muchas gracias!

Hialeah Police Send A Public Service Announcement

Yesterday, Hialeah Police sent out a Public Service Announcement to all Hialeah residents via telephone. It was communicated in English and Spanish it went like this:

If a stranger tries to sell you or asks you for your help cashing a winning lottery ticket which they cannot cash because they claim to be illegal immigrants, end the conversation quickly, leave the area and call the police. This is always a scam. Thank you and have a safe evening.

In the Spanish version they were a little more direct saying "this is an attempt to rob you " instead of "this is always a scam."

It's pretty cool that the Hialeah Police Department is embracing this new technology we call "the phone".

Heath Hazards at Hialeah Burger King

Here's a health hazard just waiting to be brought to your attention. How exciting!

Burger King employees at the 775 East 9th Street BK in Hialeah, shown above, are handling food and making your food without wearing gloves. Isn't that some health code violation or against the law or something? I bet they don't wash their hands either after using the bathroom.

Can't You Read English?

Hey? Can't you read English? The sign says "No Thru Trucks!"

We see it everyday. Truck drivers breaking the law and driving through residential areas to get around the traffic tie-ups. It's becoming a big problem in East Hialeah where traffic is always a nightmare on Palm Avenue, 4th Avenue, 8th Avenue (LeJeune), 10th Avenue and 49th Street (N.W. 103rd Street). These drivers aren't just ignoring the signs telling them not to drive their big commercial vehicles through neighborhoods, they're speeding too.

This is the beginning of an ongoing series where we'll showcase the rule breakers. Maybe next time we can get a clearer photo so we can post the company information too. Who knows, maybe the Hialeah Police Department and Mayor, Julio Robaina's office will actually do something about the problem.

Police Release Video of Elderly Man's Robbery and Murder

The Miami Herald reports that Liugans Wilson, 31, and Errol Latson, 21, both of Miami, have been charged with the first-degree murder and armed robbery of 77 year old Hialeah resident, Armando Alcala.

Big surprise, both have lengthy rap sheets.

WSVN 7 actually has surveillance footage of two men shooting an elderly man to death and robbing him for his jewelry up on their website.

The mayor says crime is down. I hear sirens every day. What do you think?

Huge Water Main Break in Hialeah

A water main break in the wee hours of the morning in Hialeah caused a 40 feet x 40 feet sink hole forcing residents to be evacuated. (see video)

"This is a 54 inch line that transmits water to a lot of cities in Northern Dade County. The pipe broke about 1:00 this morning. We don't know the cause of the rupture at this point," said Adriana Lamar of Miami-Dade Water & Sewer.

WPLG-ABC 10 reported that officials said 60 homes have been evacuated and about 120 homes have been affected. There's a six-block area currently without power. SWAT Team and Hialeah Fire Rescue trucks were sent in to bus people out of the flood zone along West Fourth Avenue, between 38th and 44th Street.

The 54-inch water pipe is located near the intersection of West Fourth Avenue (Red Road) and 40th Place. According to officials, a police officer noticed the gushing water while on patrol about 1 a.m.

Miami-Dade crews are currently working on the problem and Hialeah Police are diverting all traffic away from the area of West Fourth Avenue from West 37th Street to West 42nd Street, until further notice. Residents are urged to seek alternate routes this morning and throughout the afternoon.
