Huge Water Main Break in Hialeah

A water main break in the wee hours of the morning in Hialeah caused a 40 feet x 40 feet sink hole forcing residents to be evacuated. (see video)

"This is a 54 inch line that transmits water to a lot of cities in Northern Dade County. The pipe broke about 1:00 this morning. We don't know the cause of the rupture at this point," said Adriana Lamar of Miami-Dade Water & Sewer.

WPLG-ABC 10 reported that officials said 60 homes have been evacuated and about 120 homes have been affected. There's a six-block area currently without power. SWAT Team and Hialeah Fire Rescue trucks were sent in to bus people out of the flood zone along West Fourth Avenue, between 38th and 44th Street.

The 54-inch water pipe is located near the intersection of West Fourth Avenue (Red Road) and 40th Place. According to officials, a police officer noticed the gushing water while on patrol about 1 a.m.

Miami-Dade crews are currently working on the problem and Hialeah Police are diverting all traffic away from the area of West Fourth Avenue from West 37th Street to West 42nd Street, until further notice. Residents are urged to seek alternate routes this morning and throughout the afternoon.
